Caltech’s Aerospace Department and the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories partnered with Base 11 to engage with the underprivileged and underrepresented students with a specific focus on community colleges. We have two programs:
- Summer research internships in aerospace related fields
- Sustained STEM outreach program during the academic year
With the help of Base 11, we at Caltech have enrolled talented students from three community colleges in our summer research internship program. One of the Base 11 students, Hugo, from Orange Coast College is working on space propulsion at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and has been accepted into University of Southern California (USC) to pursue undergraduate studies in aerospace engineering.
We are using the scientific and engineering principles of aircraft and space vehicles to teach the concepts of STEM, which also serves as a nice platform to show the practical applications of math and physics. We want to ignite the minds of young people, capture their imagination and ultimately turn them into rocket scientists! Our partnership with Base11 is helping us achieve this goal.
