DETROIT (AP) - A nonprofit is planning to invest up to $1 million to create a drone training center at Detroit’s municipal airport.

The Detroit Free Press reports (https://on.freep.com/1LS86UX ) Base 11 funding will renovate two hangar bays and outfit them with equipment.

Officials say students from Detroit’s Davis Aerospace Technical High School will be offered classes at Coleman A. Young International Airport, also known as city airport. The newspaper says Costa Mesa, California-based Base 11’s for-profit subsidiary Aerodrome will offer drone-related training.



Details are being finalized, but a fall launch is expected.

At the airport, Detroit Aircraft Corp. designs manufactures and distributes small, unmanned aerial systems for military, commercial and civilian use. As part of the Base 11 project, Detroit Aircraft founder and CEO Jon Rimanelli said he’ll offer internships.
