Skyline College in San Bruno launched a momentous partnership with nonprofit Base 11 on April 6 to bring students the tools — and the training — to become the next great science, technology, engineering, mathematics leaders and entrepreneurs of the 21st Century.

More than 100 people including students, faculty, leadership, staff, community members, and San Mateo County Community College District board of trustees members attended the event on the campus.

A central part of the initiative is Skyline College’s new Fabrication Laboratory and Innovation Center, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology-based Fabrication Lab donated by Base 11 to assist Skyline College students and community members shape their dreams and ideas into viable products and business opportunities.

Landon Taylor, chief executive officer and chairman of Base 11, a STEM workforce and entrepreneur acceleration company on a mission to build a sustainable middle class in America, presented the vision for Base 11 and the STEM Revolution. He gave inspiring words about the value of the Skyline College partnership and the goal to get 1,000 students into the “Victory Circle,” which encompasses transfer to a university, getting a STEM job, and/or starting a STEM business.

“Taylor also introduced three flagship programs that will move Skyline College students into the Victory Circle: (1) Residency-based Fellowships, (2) STEM Entrepreneur Accelerator Program and Fab Lab Innovation Center, and (3) a Workforce Development Program,” said a Skyline Shines newsletter.

Skyline College’s Sarah Perkins, Ph.D., vice president of instruction; Ray Hernandez, science math technology dean; and Nick Langdoff, engineering and computer science professor, also spoke about the impact that the partnership and the Fab Lab has on Skyline College. They each expressed their excitement, gratitude, and vision for the new opportunities now possible to enhance the college’s STEM programs and to bridge STEM education and entrepreneurship for Skyline College students and community members.

Landon Taylor and Skyline College President Regina Stanback Stroud, Ed.D., announced and celebrated five Skyline College students who have been selected for the Base 11 Summer 2016 Fellowships: Alina Rai, of South San Francisco; Daniel Powers, Burlingame; Robert O’Leary, Pacifica; Alex Hercules, San Francisco; and Bryan Num, Daly City. They will soon head off to explore and research at prestigious institutions including California Institute of Technology in Pasadena; University of California, Irvine; and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

At the conclusion of the event, Stanback Stroud led the ribbon cutting ceremony and welcomed everyone into the new state-of-the-art Fabrication Laboratory and Innovation Center, a cornerstone of the Base 11 and Skyline College partnership, which will be one of about 110 Fab Labs in the country and the first on a California community college campus.

Guests had the amazing opportunity to mingle and explore the new facility, and watch as students from the college’s Engineering and Robotics Club led demonstrations with cutting edge Fab Lab equipment that includes advanced manufacturing, rapid prototyping techniques, and robotics.

“To accelerate innovation within the lab, Base 11 is also rolling out a 16-week entrepreneurial course at Skyline College designed to help student turn their classroom learning into new product ideas and then teach them how to create prototypes in the Fab Lab, develop a business plan, and pitch their product,” said at a news release. “The course will culminate in a pitch contest, with the top pitches advancing to Base 11’s national competition.”

San Mateo County farmers market getting ready for season

San Mateo County/Silicon Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau reports that certified farmers’ markets throughout San Mateo County and Palo Alto, checked by the government to ensure that the farmers selling produce at the markets actually grew the produce, are preparing for their big season.
